I do not know why I missed this issue, this is sooooo cool, already taking some of the issues together.
I’m starting to do some documentation, to considere where we want to go, and while doing so I found this… wow.
This is where I write it together, but it’s all work in progress and I am just starting.

This is a quickly staged possible way the counter properties could look. It allows for various "special" characters (checkmark, stylized X, smiley, frowny - a more flexible approach would be to allow a choice from wingdings or something like that but I don't know how complicated that UI would be to build). It also allows for various types of sequenced characters (1-2-3, a-b-c, A-B-C). It also allows for an arbitrary character to be entered.
The font size and bubble size can either be locked together (changing one changes the other) or unlocked so that one or the other can be changed. (The resize-by-handle could respect this lock as well, either just resizing the bubble if it's unlocked/independent or resizing both bubble and font if it's locked together.)
Obviously various other possibilities exist for how this could be laid out - I just thought it would be better to give something a little more concrete as compared to what I provided in the comment in the other suggestion.
