Hey there, we do not have a release scheduled yet, and there are loads of other things to do.... As you seem to be in a hurry, I suggest you look out for a command line tool which is capable of reducing image colors ([ImageMagick](http://www.imagemagick.org/script/command-line-options.php#colors) should do the job, I guess) and use Greenshot's external command to invoke it after creating the region screenshot.

Another option might be to take higher quality screenshots first, and then batch-reduce image colors of all screenshots afterwards, e.g. using Photoshop actions or comparable features of other image editing tools.

Hope this helps, best regards,
Jens

Hi,

it shouldn't really be hard to implement it, but it will need another GUI item to make the selection available. Which complicates the settings a bit, so we need some good reasons for that.

I'm curious about how much lower the file size will be. I seem to remember that it is not really a lot going from 256 to 128. Roughly said, a bit per pixel and than another 512 bytes for the colors. Don't even know if the compression of some formats are smart enough to work with 7bits per pixel.

For what does one need such small files?

Best wishes,
Robin

As this was a quick "win", for Greenshot 1.1.9 (which should be available soon) I have added a new property to the greenshot.ini which makes it possible to change the default of 256 to something else.

I have tested it with 16, seems to work, but the PNG files written will still be 8-bit meaning the resulting file will be smaller but just a bit.

I did not add a GUI entry, as we decided not to add features to the GUI for 1.x
Also the check box in the GUI will always display 256, even if you changed the value.

Be aware, the quality of your screenshots is dramatically reduced if you are using smaller values.

P.S.
I can imagine you haven't been able to make the changes yourself, they are simple but not trivial without thorough Greenshot knowledge... I saw your cry for help: https://bitbucket.org/Anon9404/greenshot-noob/wiki/Home
We know Greenshot 1.x is really hard to learn to code for, and I hope my refactorings for Greenshot 2.x will make it easier.

Best wishes,
Robin
